Assistant News Director

KDFW Fox 4 is seeking a digitally focused, dynamic, high-performing, results-driven Assistant News Director to build on our long-term success and lead our team into the future. KDFW airs 78.5 hours of local news and programming each week, more than double the news of any other station in Dallas Fort Worth. We are actively seeking a dynamic and experienced News leader with exceptional news judgment to serve as the second-in-command in our digital first newsroom. In collaboration with the VP News Director, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in overseeing the daily news and content operations across all platforms. The ideal candidate will be expected to develop new, original content for digital, streaming and linear platforms. They must bring a creative approach to the job with a successful track record of developing new ideas and seeing those ideas to fruition.

Duties and Responsibilities: The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience and understanding of digital and social media operations, coupled with a keen awareness of emerging trends in new media. As a key member of our leadership team, the candidate will be responsible for managing a large editorial team. Working closely with the managing editor, executive producers, reporters, and digital staff, the candidate will leverage strong planning skills to ensure the seamless execution of news coverage. The ability to navigate and adapt to the evolving media landscape is crucial.
The qualified candidate will demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of current local, national, and international events and issues. Additionally, they will represent the station in a manner consistent with the business standards and policies of the Company. Beyond daily operations, the candidate will contribute to the resolution of staffing and equipment issues and effectively manage newsroom expenses, subpoenas, licensing, and vendor contracts.
Desired Skills:
- Proven experience spearheading overall newsroom operations in the absence of the VP News Director, ensuring seamless coordination between departments, efficient resource allocation, and adherence to tight budgets and deadlines.
- A track record of coaching executive producers and managers through conflict resolution and communication issues to enhance their leadership and managerial skills.
- Proficiency in analyzing digital data and trends to inform and optimize the station's online strategy, resulting in increased web and social media traffic.
- Experience in building engaging newscasts and social media promotional campaigns for apps, involving talent and aimed at organic audience engagement.
- Demonstrated ability to train staff on new technology, workflows, and distribution tools.
- Ability to build relationships with community groups, along with experience planning station initiatives to produce high-quality special programming.
- Track record of conceptualizing, researching, staffing, and launching new original programming.
- Experience in managing staffing, editorial, logistical, and strategic organization of breaking and major news events, ensuring competitive and engaging coverage on all platforms.
The candidate should be adaptable, innovative, and committed to maintaining the high journalistic standards of our organization. Other duties will be assigned as deemed appropriate and necessary.
Minimum Requirements: A Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field of study from an accredited college/university, and a minimum of five years’ experience in news management with noted leadership skills is required. Must have a working knowledge of journalistic ethics, libel and privacy laws. Must have a demonstrated ability to manage multiple hours of daily newscasts and shows. Must have excellent supervisory, people and management skills. Requires a unique and diverse combination of computers, engineering, budgeting, purchasing, cost control, personnel issues and planning experience along with a background in journalism and TV news. Photographer
The Photographer must have proven ability to shoot and edit video and stills in the field, newsroom, and studio. Candidate will gather information and interviews in the field and shoots remotes as assigned. Candidate will operate audio, video, and transmission equipment for live and taped broadcast and digital content. This position is also responsible for editing news stories on deadline in the field and in the newsroom. The ability to write and produce video for broadcast and digital is a plus. Position must contribute to station social media channels with information, stills and video.
A Bachelor’s degree from a four (4) year college or university is preferred. Three (3) years of experience as a photojournalist or equivalent in the news department of a commercial television station required. Must have a valid driver’s license and exemplary driving record. Candidate must have strong communication skills, work on tight deadlines and have the ability to deal effectively/professionally with the public, public officials and staff. Ideal candidate must have strong story telling abilities, problem-solving skills, and a positive attitude. Producer
Strong writing and show production skills are required. Must have strong editorial knowledge and be an active decision maker, including working with Anchors, Reporters, Assignment Editors, Associate Producers, Directors and Managers. Responsible for producing all elements of newscasts-- including leads, stories, teases and breakouts. Experienced in mining social media information and producing elements for broadcast. Must be an experienced leader in coverage and execution of live and breaking news event coverage. Perform other duties as appropriate and assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or Communications required. Five (5) or seven (7) years’ television news experience in medium to major market. Excellent communication skills, solid news judgment and strong writing skills required. Strong research/data recovery skills. Reporter
Candidate must have proven and consistent experience as a Reporter. That includes live studio and field reporting, interviewing, research, writing, story and segment setup and special reports. Candidate must enterprise news stories, set up and produce remote segments, interviews and be versatile as a writer and storyteller. Proven experience with enterprising local and original content for broadcast and digital. Must execute daily stories with creative storytelling. Bachelor's Degree in Journalism or Communications required. Five (5) to seven (7) years television news experience in a medium to major market. Excellent communication skills, solid news judgment and strong writing and on-air performance skills required. Strong knowledge of legal and ethical parameters for broadcast and digital media is essential. Must have a thorough knowledge of current events and governmental, police, and other agency procedures. Digital Content Creator
Do you love being in the know? We're looking for a person who is willing to dig beyond the headlines to inform audiences through written and video content. Digital Content Creators create compelling content that is driven by the user experience, including text stories, photos/graphics, live streaming content and social media. DCCs reach millions of FOX 4 followers on FOX LOCAL, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. Work with FOX TV Stations Group Content team to distribute high-interest stories to FOX-owned stations. Monitoring and acting upon real-time analytics, Google Trends and trending topics is a must. Seeking a candidate with 3+ years’ experience developing and publishing content, including news, on digital and social platforms preferred. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to, strategically negotiating existing business, building strong client relationships, and consistently prospecting and generating new business across all platforms. The ideal candidate must be able to identify qualified targets, use strong communication and presentation skills throughout the sales process, and maintain a high closing ratio. The successful candidate will consistently package all platforms together and routinely present the benefits of integrating linear and digital advertising (OTT, mobile, livestream, and display) in order to create a truly multi-platform campaign.
The ideal candidate will be a sales professional with television/media sales experience and have a proven track record of success in media sales. Candidate must have knowledge of media math, TV ratings/impressions and Digital/OTT metrics. Candidate must be a self-starter with strong verbal and written communication skills. We are looking for someone who is energetic, positive, creative and passionate to succeed in the highly competitive environment of media sales. Strong analytical skills and strategic thinking are critical to the position. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite required and knowledge of Wide Orbit is a plus.
